Scarring

What is it?

Scarring is part of the body’s natural healing response following injury, inflammation, surgery or damage to the skin. The appearance of a scar depends on a range of factors, including the type and depth of the original injury and the way an individual’s skin heals.

Scars can present in different ways. Some may be raised or thickened, while others can be depressed below the surrounding skin. Changes in pigmentation can also occur.

Acne is a common cause of facial scarring, with several different types of acne scar possible.

Treatment Options

Because scars vary considerably, there is no single treatment suitable for every type.

Depending on the characteristics of the scar, treatment options may include topical therapies, cryotherapy, electrosurgery, intralesional steroid treatment, laser treatment or surgical excision.

Laser resurfacing may also be considered for certain types of scarring, including acne scars, with treatment selected according to the individual presentation.

When to seek advice

Scars that are painful, itchy, raised, changing or causing cosmetic concern can be assessed to determine whether treatment may be beneficial.

A consultation allows the type and characteristics of the scar to be identified and appropriate treatment options discussed.
