Acne

What is it?

Acne is a common inflammatory skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. It can present in a number of ways, including blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, deeper cysts and nodules.

A range of factors can contribute to the development of acne, including hormones, genetics, bacteria, skincare products and lifestyle factors. Acne can affect people of all ages and commonly occurs on the face, chest, shoulders and back.

In some cases, acne may also leave persistent redness, pigmentation or scarring after the active lesions have resolved.

Treatment Options

Treatment will depend on the type and severity of acne, as well as individual factors that may be contributing to the condition.

Options may include changes to skincare, topical treatments or oral medications. Where acne has resulted in pigmentation or scarring, additional treatments may also be considered to improve the appearance and texture of the skin.

A treatment plan can be developed following assessment of both the active acne and any associated scarring or pigmentation.

When to seek advice

If acne is persistent, worsening, causing discomfort or beginning to leave scars, a medical consultation can help determine the most appropriate approach.

Early treatment of inflammatory acne may also help reduce the risk of ongoing pigmentation and permanent scarring.
