Cherry angiomas are common, benign vascular lesions that appear as small red or purple spots on the skin. They may occur almost anywhere on the body and generally become more common with age.
Telangiectasia are small, widened blood vessels that become visible close to the surface of the skin. They often appear as fine red lines and are commonly seen around the nose, cheeks and other areas of the face.
Visible blood vessels may occur independently or be associated with factors such as sun damage or skin conditions including rosacea.
Treatment Options
Treatment may be considered when cherry angiomas or visible vessels are a cosmetic concern.
Depending on the type, size and location of the vascular lesion, treatment options may include electrosurgery, cryotherapy or laser and light-based treatments.
As vascular lesions can differ considerably in their appearance and underlying cause, assessment is important when determining an appropriate treatment.
When to seek advice
While cherry angiomas are generally harmless, not every red or vascular-looking skin lesion is the same.
If a lesion is new, changing, bleeding or otherwise causing concern, it should be assessed before cosmetic treatment is undertaken.
